How to Make Your Own Word Search

Whether you're a teacher, parent, or puzzle enthusiast, here's how to create word search puzzles—by hand or online.

Option 1: Use Our Free Generator

The easiest way: use Word Search Fun! Visit our home page or Printable Puzzles page. Pick a theme (animals, colors, space, etc.) and grid size. We generate the puzzle instantly. Play online or print it. No design skills needed—and it's free.

Option 2: Make One by Hand

If you want a fully custom puzzle (e.g., with your child's spelling words), you can make one by hand:

  1. Choose your words. Pick 5–15 words that fit your theme or lesson. Shorter words (3–6 letters) work best for small grids.
  2. Draw a grid. Use graph paper or create a grid on the computer. Start with 10×10 or 12×12 for beginners.
  3. Place the words. Write each word into the grid—horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Avoid overlapping if possible, or let words share letters where they cross.
  4. Fill empty cells. Add random letters to the blank spaces. Avoid creating accidental words that aren't on your list.
  5. Write the word list. List all the words beside or below the grid for the solver.

Tips for Great Puzzles

  • Match word length to grid size—long words need bigger grids.
  • Mix directions so the puzzle isn't too easy (all horizontal) or too hard (all diagonal).
  • For classrooms, tie words to the current unit—spelling list, science vocabulary, etc.
  • Test it yourself before giving it to others. Can you find every word?
