Terms and definitions for word search puzzles. Perfect for teachers, parents, and puzzle enthusiasts.
- Grid
- The square or rectangular array of letters where words are hidden. Common sizes include 8×8, 10×10, 12×12, and 15×15.
- Word List
- The list of words you need to find in the grid. Usually shown beside or below the puzzle.
- Theme
- A topic that groups the hidden words—e.g., animals, colors, space. Themed puzzles help with vocabulary and engagement.
- Horizontal
- Words that run left-to-right or right-to-left in a straight row across the grid.
- Vertical
- Words that run top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top in a straight column.
- Diagonal
- Words that run at an angle, from corner to corner or across the grid. Can go in any diagonal direction.
- Forward / Backward
- Words can read normally (forward) or reversed (backward). "CAT" might appear as "TAC" in the grid.
- Eight Directions
- Words can hide in eight ways: left, right, up, down, and four diagonals—each forward or backward.
- Hint
- A clue that highlights one letter of an unfound word to help you locate it.
- Word Find / Word Seek
- Alternative names for word search puzzles, used in different regions.
- Answer Key
- A version of the puzzle with the hidden words highlighted, used to check answers or help when stuck.
- Grid Size
- The dimensions of the puzzle (e.g., 10×10 means 10 rows and 10 columns). Larger grids are usually harder.
